A Georgia man accidentally shot himself during a rage incident in which he was “clearly impatient and upset” on a highway Thursday, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. in the 8000 block of Buchanan Drive in the city of Dallas, after a truck carrying lumber had caused a traffic jam on the highway, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Paulding.

Two men in reflective vests were on the road directing traffic so the truck could continue on its way, at which point the armed subject began to get annoyed.

“The suspect/assailant, who was clearly impatient and upset by the delay, got out of his vehicle and threatened the men directing traffic by pointing his weapon at them,” the sheriff’s office said.

In the midst of the anger, the angry driver, whose identity has not been released, returned to his vehicle, accidentally shooting himself in the hand while reholstering his pistol. He told witnesses to call 911 and then fled the scene, police said.

The driver later called 911 and claimed that he fled the scene to receive medical attention. He was found by officers at a fire station, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office detailed that while speaking with authorities, investigators noticed that he told conflicting stories. He is expected to be interviewed once he is released from the hospital to determine if he will be charged.
