The United States government welcomed this Sunday the rapprochement between Israelis and Palestinians, who promised to hold a meeting in Jordan in order to achieve a “de-escalation on the ground” in the face of the increase in tensions that have occurred in recent weeks.

These tensions have been manifested this Sunday, when two Israelis died in a shooting attack in the north of the occupied West Bank, while the escalation of violence has been in force in the region for several weeks.

The current wave of violence has marked the most violent start to the year in the region since 2000. At least 62 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in less than two months, largely as a result of near-misses daily Israeli arrest operations in Palestinian towns that have been going on for almost a year, commonly ending in armed clashes with Palestinians.

For their part, the number of Israelis killed in the attack on Sunday, as well as so far this year, has risen to 13, after several attacks carried out by Palestinians in East Jerusalem, which has been occupied in recent weeks, reported the EFE news agency. .

Sunday’s meeting took place in the Jordanian city of Aqaba, on the Red Sea, marking the first of its kind in Jordan for years.

During the meeting, the United States, Jordan and Egypt attended as mediators.
