Authorities in Arizona reported an accident involving a pickup truck and a group of cyclists which left at least two people dead and 11 others injured.
According to emergency services, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second death occurred moments later at the hospital after the Goodyear Police Department indicated the van was driving near Phoenix on Saturday morning, when he hit the group of adult cyclists.
“We are saddened to report that this is a fatal crash with two confirmed dead cyclists. An adult woman and an adult man. This accident involved a single vehicle (pickup truck). The adult driver remained on the scene,” police said, confirming that both victims were cyclists.
Likewise, eleven other people were taken to area hospitals with various injuries, according to police reports.
Cotton Lane, near Phoenix, had to be closed in several directions for several hours after the fatal accident, added the police, who are still investigating the cause of the events.
Meanwhile, Goodyear police spokeswoman Lisa Berry said the driver of the pickup, whose identity has not been released, remained at the scene after the crash. It was not specified if he was arrested.
It is yet to be determined if the driver was intoxicated or speeding at the time of the accident.
Despite what happened, another accident was reported hours later in the Goodyear area, involving at least four vehicles, AZFamily said.
Three victims, including an elderly man, a pregnant woman and a 7-year-old girl, were hospitalized.
