This Sunday Volodimir Zelensky said that peace in the Ukrainian region can be restored when the sovereignty of the Crimean peninsula is respected by Russia. The President of Ukraine stressed that the conflict that has existed between the two countries since 2022 began in 2014 when the Russians annexed that territory.
Zelensky emphasized that “if we return Crimea, we will restore peace,” while the Ukrainian president promised that the Ukrainian flag will be returned to every corner taken by the Russians. “Our town. Our history. We will return the Ukrainian flag to all corners of Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote in a Telegram message.
State Department spokesman Ned Price assured that “Crimea belongs to Ukraine” and that the United States will never recognize the peninsula as Russian territory. This has been a position that has been maintained since 2014 when the territorial dispute began. Even so, on several occasions White House spokesmen have not confirmed whether the Joe Biden administration will commit to kyiv in the fight for territory.
However, the position of the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, contradicts Washington’s statements that “everything depends on what kyiv decides.” The consular representative assures that her country “will fight for the liberation of the peninsula.
“On February 26, 2014, thousands of Crimean Tatars and other Ukrainians gathered to declare: We are Ukrainians. Crimea is Ukraine (…) As you continue to fight for your sovereignty and democracy, the United States will work with you to create a future that offers freedom,” he said.
Two new calls for peace
On Sunday afternoon, Saudi Arabia called for peace between the Russians and the Ukraine through a message from the Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan al Saud, who is on a visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. In this sense, he advocated that a peace pact be sponsored by the United Nations (UN).
This pronouncement comes after China will present a proposal to achieve peace in the region, despite the fact that it has been rejected by German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz for not proposing in the agreement that Russian troops leave Ukraine. Even so, Zelenski called the signals from Beijing to find a consensus for the end of the conflict “positive”.
In addition, Zelensky announced that he wants to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, as soon as possible to join the Asian giant’s efforts to achieve a cessation of Russian-Ukrainian hostilities.
