Edson Arantes do Nascimiento, better known as “Pelé”, is considered the greatest footballer in history, and for that reason this Monday he received a posthumous tribute at the FIFA The Best Awards gala.
The tribute was led by the president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, and Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo Nazario.
Ronaldo presented The Best posthumously to Pele’s widow, Marcia Aoki, who was present at the event honoring the best footballers.
“When Pelé was playing, the world was more racist than it is now. He showed that a black could be the best of all, that he could be at the top and set a precedent without equal. Pelé was great on the pitch, but also had a huge impact on society,” Ronaldo Nazario said of the three-time world champion.
In the middle of the tribute, a video was projected with the best moments of Pelé’s career and everyone present applauded him.
King Pelé passed away on December 29, 2022, after suffering health complications as a result of colon cancer that had been detected.
