The Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Brazil approved this Monday that ex-soccer player Robson de Souza, better known as ‘Robinho’, serve in his country the nine-year sentence handed down by the Italian court for rape.
“For the body there is no legal impediment to the transfer of the execution of the sentence”, indicates the opinion of the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, Carlos Frederico Santos.
This opinion of the Prosecutor’s Office, which was sent to the Supreme Court of Brazil, is the first step to standardize the sentence to Brazil.
Although, due to a Brazilian constitutional principle, Robinho’s extradition to Italy is impossible, on February 17, the court of that country made official the request for the approval of the sentence.
The deputy attorney stated that the issue of approving the sentence is based on respect for the principle of not applying two sentences for the same crime.
Robinho’s defense lawyer, Leonardo Pantaleão, came to speak in local media in favor of serving the sentence in Brazil.
In October, Italy had requested the extradition of the former Real Madrid and Milan striker after the conviction for the gang rape of a young Albanian woman in Milan (North Italy), in 2013.
Robinho, according to investigations, supposedly made the woman, then 23 years old, drink until she was unconscious to later force her, along with a group of friends, to have sex in a nightclub cloakroom without her being able to object.
The events occurred while the footballer had a contract with Milan, a team in which he was for four seasons (2010-2014).
