The Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security of the United States, Bonnie Jenkins, affirmed on Monday that Russia is currently demonstrating that it is not a responsible nuclear power, after suspending its participation in the START III agreement that is based on the control, supervision and reduction of strategic weapons with nuclear potential.
According to his remarks before the Conference on Disarmament, Jenkins stated that the world is facing a dramatically unstable security landscape. In this sense, the representative of the United States defined that the tests that the powers must face at this time are the non-proliferation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the ballistic tests carried out by the North Korean regime and the atomic program from Iran.
“The United States will continue to advocate building on previous progress, even as some want to tear down all that has been achieved,” Jennings said.
Recently, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Riabkov pointed out that Washington has not ruled out abandoning the treaty on disarmament and reduction of strategic weapons and nuclear carrying, after Vladimir Putin announced that they are suspending their participation in the treaty. However, the Pentagon replied that this idea is not on the table, so the US position on START III remains valid.
Sabrina Singh, one of the spokespersons for the Defense Department, described it as “irresponsible” for Russia to suspend its participation in the nuclear regulation pact. With this pronouncement, US security follows the line of speech of President Joe Biden who from Poland branded Putin’s decision as a “serious mistake”.
