the-united-states-formally-requests-the-extradition-of-ovidio-guzman,-alias-'el-raton'

The United States formalized with the Mexican government the request for the extradition of drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán, one of the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán most wanted by Washington and arrested almost two months ago.

The petition was sent to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) days before the March 5 deadline set by a Mexican judge for the United States to present the petition to extradite Guzmán, detained since January 5 in the Almoloya prison in the State of Mexico, as confirmed by federal sources to the EFE information agency on Monday.

Washington seeks to try Guzmán, 32, for the crime of criminal association to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.

The request, which contains the file with the information and evidence collected by the Department of Justice, will be turned over to Judge Gregorio Salazar Hernández, of the Almoloya Criminal Justice Center.

The United States request will face injunctions that Guzmán’s son, also known as “El Raton”, has obtained to indefinitely stop his extradition.

On the other hand, the term of 60 days of pretrial detention ordered by a Mexican judge on January 6 is approaching.

It should be remembered that at the end of last month a Mexican judge stopped the possible extradition of Ovidio Guzmán, detained since January 5.

The Mexican Army detained Ovidio Guzmán on January 5 in the northern state of Sinaloa and later transferred him to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation (Cefereso) number 1 Altiplano, also known as the Almoloya prison, located in the State of Mexico, where His father was also held, who escaped from there in 2015.

The arrest was surprising as it occurred days before US President Joe Biden’s visit to Mexico on the occasion of the North American Leaders Summit, although the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, denied any relationship between the two events.

The United States, which offered 5 million dollars for his capture since December 2021, accuses the alleged drug trafficker of crimes that deal with the conspiracy to introduce drugs into that country.
