The GoFundMe fundraising campaign for the 6-year-old girl recovering from a Pit bull attack reported earlier this month in Maine already exceeds $69,000 in donations.
The initiative seeks to help the family with medical expenses and transfers to Boston Children’s Hospital, in Massachusetts, where the minor remains confined.
At the hospital, 1,000 stitches were taken to his face in a procedure that took 11 hours.
The animal practically disfigured little Lily’s smile on February 18.
Dorothy Norton, the victim’s mother, told WMTW television that the incident was reported at a neighbor’s house in Chesterville where the minor was playing with a friend.
The friend’s mother was taking care of the animal when the emergency occurred.
“Lily sat at the table and the dog attacked her. She did so to put her shoulders up, so she did the right thing because the dog was going for her neck. Then the mother came out of the bathroom because the other girl was screaming. ‘Mommy, mommy, something is wrong!’ As soon as she returned to the kitchen, the dog let her go,” the woman recounted.
Lily was initially taken to a hospital in Farmington, but was later moved by air ambulance to the one in Boston.
Until a few days ago, the minor could not speak due to the injuries, although the mother said that she blinked and tried to ask her for what she needed.
Chesterville’s animal control office has not commented on the case as an investigation is underway, but Norton said the dog would be euthanized.
