According to the Walmart website, which is the largest physical store chain in the United States, 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of one of its stores. And although it may seem an unlikely statement, if the company’s figures are taken into account, it shows that the number may be correct. And it is that Walmart has 4,717 stores in the United States alone, in which it employs more than 1.6 million people.
Therefore, despite the fact that the chain has recently been forced to close some stores due to low sales, it seems unlikely that this represents a real problem for the company.
When it started in 1962 in the city of Rogers, Arizona, there was only one store. But Sam Walton, the founder of the company, managed to raise that number to 24 by 1967.
In 1980, there were already 276 stores. By 1992, the number reached 1,928, and by the year 2000 it reached 3,989 branches throughout the country.
During the same period, other chains, such as JCPenney, Sears, and Kmart, declined until they reached a critical point in the mid-2000s.
Walmart was able to remain among the favorites of tens of millions of people on the simple premise of offering everyday low prices.
It was also characterized by offering buyers a large number of items in one place.
For example, a typical Walmart superstore, measuring about 187,000 square feet and employing 350 people, offers everything from clothing to sporting goods to groceries.
Groceries are among the best-selling products at Walmart.
Walmart’s success has been so staggering that its annual sales currently exceed $500 billion, as reported by 24/7 Wall St.
It should be noted that Walmart, despite its size, is a regional store, with its stores having a greater presence in the South, the Midwest, and California.
Walmart’s largest stores are located in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, and Texas.
