“New York’s poorest residents are missing out on at least $2.5 billion in federal assistance, and the state is missing out on about $4.4 billion in economic stimulus, because state agencies don’t make sure residents are enrolled in benefit programs key for those who apply”.

The previous conclusion is derived from a report presented this Monday by the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis of The New School for Social, supported by the AARP New York organization.

“The confusing application processes for some programs, the stigma of receiving public assistance, and the difficulty in navigating the technology required to access benefits are the reasons for this trend,” explained Professor Teresa Ghilarducci of the Schwartz Center.

Many of the potential beneficiaries, who are eligible to receive help, are the elderly in New York, at a time when the population over 65 living below the poverty line is increasing, according to data shared by the Center for an Urban Future.
