The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that Jetson Electric Bikes is recalling Rogue 42-volt hoverboards due to fire hazards, as lithium-ion battery packs can overheat. and endanger the safety of consumers.

The CPSC notes that due to this malfunction, a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister died in a fire on April 1, 2022 in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, as the county fire marshal determined that a 42-volt Jetson Rogue was the point of origin of the fire, which spread from the room where it was loaded to other parts of the house, resulting in the death of the two girls and smoke inhalation injuries to the parents of the minors.

According to the report, about 53,000 scooters were sold at Target stores across the country and on its website from August 2018 to June 2019 and at ridejetson.com from January 2019 to November 2021 for between $100 and $150 dollars.

The CPSC and Jetson are urging consumers to stop using and stop charging the 42-volt version of the skateboards immediately. Consumers who have purchased these devices should contact Jetson for a full refund.

The recall involves all Jetson Rogue 42-volt self-balancing scooters/hoverboards. The skateboards have two wheels with light-up hubcaps and come in the following colors: black, blue, red, pink, and purple with a black deck. Jetson is printed on one side of the body and on top of the foot pads. The affected units were manufactured between 2018 and 2019 and have a UL certification label and serial number on the bottom of the unit.

The charging port on affected drives has three pins and is located to the left of the power button. Units with a single-pin charging port located to the right of the power button are not included in this recall.

For questions and more information, consumers can contact Jetson at 800-635-4815 from 10 am to 6 pm ET Monday through Friday, or contact them online by clicking here.

The CPSC reminds consumers to always be present when charging their skateboards and to use only the supplied charger, as well as to avoid hoverboards or other micromobility devices that have been recalled.
