six-immigrants-died-trying-to-cross-into-canada-from-the-united-states-through-an-illegal-passage

This Friday, unfortunately, the Canadian authorities reported the death of six people, including a minor, when they tried to cross the San Lorenzo River from the United States to reach Canadian territory. In a statement, the Akwesasne Police explained that they would be two families from India and Romania, in addition to two more missing persons.

According to local media information, the two missing are Casey Oakes, 30 years old and a member of the Akwesasne community in Canada, and a baby who would be part of the deceased Romanian family. Lee-Ann O’Brien, deputy police chief for the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne, explained that the six bodies were found near Akwesasne, in Quebec.

The 30-year-old victim was last seen on Wednesday in a small boat on the island of Cornwall, 100 kilometers from Ottawa. According to the Akwesasne police, since January this year there have been 48 incidents of immigrants trying to cross illegally from the United States to Canada.

Recently, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau, signed an agreement for both nations to cooperate in the migrant crisis, which since 2022 has been part of the political agenda of both leaders. In that agreement they signed a treaty that places Canada as a nation willing to collaborate with the immigrants from the Roxham Road pass, who mostly come from New York.

Despite the fact that the Prime Minister of Canada promised to welcome 15,000 immigrants, almost immediately he announced that they will begin deporting migrants and refugees who cross into his territory through unofficial entry points after having passed through the United States.

“Border agents will enforce the agreement starting at midnight tonight and will deport irregular crossers to the nearest border point,” the Canadian prime minister announced during a meeting with Biden.
