Starting this Saturday, the Russian delegation to the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) will assume the presidency for a month, corresponding to the status of the coalition of countries and following the protocol. Even so, the Ukrainian government has seen this measure as “a bad joke”, so they have boycotted the decision.
The Security Council statute details that Russia now has the duty to manage the work agenda and preside over meetings. This measure is taken based on the rotation regulation that for each month that passes, a Member State will take on a series of duties within the Council, based on alphabetical order for a delegation to assume the corresponding responsibilities.
It also has the functions of communicating agreements, supervising possible crises and drafting Security Council resolutions. The State in charge of the presidency can organize special sessions on matters that it considers particularly important and have the presence of members of the Government.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to travel to New York in the coming days to chair at least two meetings in the Security Council. One of the meetings will be focusing on respect for the United Nations Charter and another on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that seeing Russia at the helm of the most important UN body is a bad joke. “Russia usurped a seat, is waging a colonial war, its leader is a war criminal indicted by the International Criminal Court for kidnapping children,” the head of Ukrainian diplomacy said on Twitter.
So far, the member countries of the Security Council are not expected to boycott the Ukrainians’ disagreement with this measure launched by some pro-Ukrainian organizations, although they could choose to send lower-ranking diplomats to some of the meetings organized by Russia. .
