ukraine-insists-that-russia-must-not-abuse-the-presidency-of-the-un-security-council

This Saturday the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, urged the members of the Security Council of the United Nations Organization to prevent Russia from abusing the current presidency in the coalition of countries. Due to the statutes of the United Nations Organization, the Russians must take over the security board for a month.

Russia’s responsibilities are now only based on managing the work schedule and chairing meetings. In addition, this measure is not a decision of the Security Council, but is part of the founding statute that is based on the monthly rotation of a Member State that will take on a series of duties within the Council. This measure is taken in alphabetical order for a delegation to assume its responsibilities

“The Russian presidency of the UN Security Council is a slap in the face to the international community. I urge the current members of the UN Security Council to thwart any Russian attempts to abuse their presidency,” Ukraine’s head of diplomacy wrote on Twitter.

Foreign Minister Kuleba also stated that Moscow has its seat on the Security Council, since it would have been appropriated when the Soviet Union, which was one of the founding countries of the United Nations Organization, was dissolved, as a result of its participation in World War II. World.

In addition, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkevics, described as “immoral and deplorable” the fact that Russia assumes the rotating presidency despite waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. However, Russia had already held the presidency of the board when in February of last year, just days after the invasion of Ukraine, it took its turn.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to travel to New York in the coming days to chair at least two meetings in the Security Council. One of the meetings will be focusing on respect for the United Nations Charter and another on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
