An Alabama police officer fatally shot his pregnant girlfriend and then lied to 911 dispatchers that the woman committed suicide, authorities said.
The subject identified as David McCoy, 29, who was a Huntsville officer, was charged in late March with capital murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Courtney Spraggins, 26, in 2022, as well as their baby who was about to be born
Investigators determined that McCoy shot Spraggins in the head while they were sitting in a parked vehicle outside his Huntsville apartment on Jan. 7, 2022, according to WHNT.
McCoy called the non-emergency police line to see if they received any reports of gunshots online, telling dispatcher that he woke up to the sound of a gun being fired.
Upon arrival investigators found Spraggins shot in the head in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He claimed that he “believed that he saw her once” and that it appeared that she committed suicide, but he later told investigators that he did not know her.
Detectives on the scene found a photo of McCoy in Spraggins’ vehicle, as well as a text message on the woman’s phone that gave clues as to what led up to the incident.
The woman tried to move into her boyfriend’s apartment last December, which she shared with another woman, but the subject told her he needed “more time.”
Investigators noted that in a text message exchange, Spraggins asked McCoy what they should do in that situation, and the subject replied: “A bullet to the head is fine with me.”
After complex cross-examination, McCoy admitted that he had killed his girlfriend, according to testimony from his preliminary hearing.
The hearing against McCoy is expected to take place on April 4.
