new-york-city-faces-threat-of-40-60-mph-winds-with-thunderstorms-and-possible-tornadoes

Severe thunderstorms are coming to New York City and could hit the metropolitan area with damaging winds, hail and possible tornadoes, specialists warned.

According to Fox meteorologist Amy Freeze, the I-95 corridor will need to prepare “40 to 60 mph winds and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.”

This has been generated by a storm system that has spawned dozens of tornadoes in the American heartland, covering 30 million residents from the Delmarva Peninsula to upstate New York.

Likewise, the Fox Forecast Center warned that the clash of air masses and stability were enough to trigger a series of storms.

New York City was placed in the threat zone where heavy rainfall and gusty winds forced visitors to Time Square to seek shelter.

Areas south and west of the tri-state area were hardest hit, with at least one tornado seen moving through the middle of Sussex County, Delaware.

For their part, local offices of the National Weather Service issued at least a dozen tornado watches, including areas of Delaware and near the Jersey shore.

Likewise, emergency management in Delaware announced that several trees and cables were down in Bridgeville, so authorities carried out at least one rescue after the storm.

The National Weather Service received multiple reports of dime-sized hail from southern Pennsylvania to Delaware. A 98 mph wind gust was also observed.

The combination of storms and gusty winds associated with the frontal boundary produced nearly a million power outages across the eastern half of the United States, the New York Post reported.

Winds reached 45 mph in Columbus, Ohio and in Washington winds reached over 30 mph outside of thunderstorms.
