fan-injured-by-pieces-of-kevin-magnussen's-car-at-the-australian-grand-prix

DNFs and crashes set the tone for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, and they didn’t just happen on the track, but in the stands as well.

An event attendee was injured by a piece of Haas’s Kevin Magnussen’s car, which collided with a retaining wall.

Although the car continued to run, the right rear wheel completely came off and he had to abandon the race.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Andrew Westacott reported the incident, saying the fan suffered a cut on his arm caused by a piece of carbon fiber.

“Coincidentally, one of our engineers saw it, and anecdotally, it appears that the carbon fiber remains of the wheel hub were shot into the air and when they landed they cut a man’s arm,” the spokesperson said.

In addition, Westacoott assured that it is an isolated event, because it is not often that the debris tends to rise so high. However, the event set a precedent to increase security at the Albert Park circuit,

“It seems that it is an isolated case, because it is not normal for the debris to rise 20 meters in the air, the height of the fences in all the circuits in the world. We comply with the FIA regulations, but like everything in motorsport, at the end of the race a report is made to see what needs to be improved”, he added.
