Despite his criticism, the historic promoter Óscar de la Hoya does not stop having Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez on his mind and recently decided to send him a message about what would be best in his career as a professional boxer.
During a recent interview offered to Fight Hype, the president of Golden Boy Promotions stated that he would recommend the boxer from Guadalajara face David Benavídez instead of fighting the British John Ryder.
‘The Golden Boy’ assured that this measure is due to the victory that the Mexican-American achieved over Caleb Plant, making him the perfect fighter to face Canelo.
“I would do the Benavídez vs. Canelo right away, because styles make fights. Benavídez would go to the clash with him, and whoever lands the first blow wins. It’s those kinds of fights that build your legacy. Those fights with which you make people respect you. If I was his promoter, we would definitely go against the best,” he expressed.
It is important to note that Canelo Álvarez decided to put Benavídez aside despite his constant requests to organize a fight between the two and ended up choosing John Ryder as a pre-fight against Dmitry Bivol in September; The redhead’s goal is to get revenge for the defeat he suffered in 2022 against the Russian.
On this subject, Óscar de la Hoya maintained that the Russian’s combat style could again cause problems for the Guadalajara, so he considers that this rematch is not the best for his career.
“Bivol has a style that is not good for Canelo. Bivol is light on his feet, and Canelo is heavy on his feet. That could give him a lot of problems in the future,” she highlighted.
The fight between Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez and John Ryder will take place on May 6 at the Akron stadium in Guadalajara, a confrontation that marks the return of the Aztec to the ring of his country after 10 years of absence.
