An apparently healthy man was found unconscious in a cell after being detained as a suspect in a domestic violence incident in New York.
According to NYPD, officers discovered the 38-year-old man unconscious inside the Times Square Substation Jail, a Manhattan tourist mecca, on Saturday around 2 p.m.
He was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was under investigation, but the man does not appear to have committed suicide, he said. New York Post.
Police said the detainee, whose identity has not yet been released, had been arrested for a “domestic incident”, without giving further details of where or when he was arrested.
In September Gregory Acevedo, a 48-year-old prisoner, died when he jumped into the East River while escaping from the floating jail “Vernon C. Bain Center” in The Bronx (NYC). In July, another 34-year-old Latino detainee died of an overdose in Rikers prison, the largest in New York.
Last year overdoses and suicides caused the most deaths (19) in a decade on Rikers Island.
