A 21-year-old man allegedly involved in the shooting of three Kansas City police officers has been mistakenly released, authorities said.
Jae’veon Marquice Mitchell-Locke faces charges of attempted murder and other crimes, including distribution and possession of fentanyl, in a case involving two other men facing similar charges.
That is why Jae’veon was held in the Platte County jail in Missouri on unrelated charges, however, he was released on April 20, according to local media outlet KMBC.
The outlet reported that the jail did not acknowledge the error until the next day, citing Major Erik Holland of the Platte County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).
“It’s premature for me to say how it happened or why it happened, but we will investigate it and take the appropriate steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Holland told the outlet.
“There are processes in place to prevent someone who has outstanding warrants or holds from other agencies from being released,” he added.
Authorities are conducting an investigation due to Mitchelle-Locke’s release, though the immediate focus was on returning the 21-year-old to custody.
“We will take appropriate action once we determine what occurred,” Maj. said. Holland. “Our primary focus at this time is to locate Locke and get him back into custody.”
For his part, Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Karl Oakman stressed that the department is seeking custody of the young man and warned anyone with information to contact authorities.
“He is a dangerous individual who must be taken off the streets,” Oakman wrote in a statement provided to KCTV. “If someone finds him, they should assume he is armed and dangerous and immediately call 911.”
The other two people allegedly involved in the shootings are currently in the Wyandotte County Jail. They include Cornell Jones and Samarion Ardel England, who were booked on April 5 and April 11, respectively.
