Since Anthony Volpe’s arrival in the Major Leagues, the shortstop has been well received by his teammates, but especially by Aaron Judge. The New York Yankees captain has had unique gestures with the rookie and even stated that he is “under his guardianship”.
During spring training, the “Judge” made several welcome gifts for Volpe, including a Playstation 5, he also arranged to give him custom-made suits to use on team trips, which shows the good esteem the outfielder has 31 years old with the rookie.
“He is very entrenched and is part of this group. Anthony is becoming a big part of this,” Judge told the US portal. The Athletic.
At just 21 years old Volpe is the third best prospect in the majors, that’s why the Yankees trusted him to be the team’s starting shortstop this season and Judge knows he’s going to be in the Bronx for a long time, that’s why he makes him feel as comfortable as possible.
“He’s going to be the team’s shortstop for the next 15 years, you have to keep him comfortable and feel at home,” Judge said.
Train with the greats
Manager Aaron Boone has welcomed this connection between Judge and Volpe and has even put them in the same training group. Giancarlo Stanton and Jugde share batting practice with rookie Volpe so the youngster can absorb as much as possible from the two experienced sluggers.
The shortstop’s offensive start with the Yankees has not been the best, however with the help of Judge, who has defended him against criticism, he has been able to increase his production a bit and has already raised his average to .230 with 7 RBIs and 18 singles in his first 25 major league games.
