mexican-government-will-indemnify-the-families-of-the-victims-of-the-ciudad-juarez-tragedy

The Secretary of the Interior of Mexico and in charge of the Executive Power of Mexico, Adán Augusto López, assured this Wednesday that the reparation of the damage to the families of the 40 immigrants who died in the Tragedy of Ciudad Juárez, when a detention center for migrants burned on fire.

Just ten days ago, the Mexican government authorities reported that the remains of seven Venezuelan immigrants, who died in the immigration detention center, were recognized by the Venezuelan consular authorities, together with the relatives of the victims. Given this, the delivery of the remains of the victims of the tragedy was concluded.

Given this, the Guatemalan ambassador in Mexico, Marco Tulio Chicas Sosa, declared to the media the request to the Mexican Government for compensation for the relatives of 19 Guatemalan migrants who died in the fire at the National Institute of Migration (INM) station. That is why this Thursday the representative of the Mexican Government affirmed that all relatives will be compensated.

However, Secretary López assured that until now there is no formal request from the Government of Guatemala to “repair the damage to the affected migrants or the families of the deceased.” “The instruction that we have and that we have been doing through the Undersecretary of Human Rights and the Commission for Attention to Victims (…) We have not had any formal request from the Government of Guatemala or the ambassador of that country,” he said in a press conference.

Before announcing this measure, a judge from the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Ciudad Juárez postponed his decision to impose the sentence of the director of the National Institute of Migration (INM), Francisco Garduño, for his responsibility in the death of 40 immigrants in a center of detention that burned on fire without receiving support from the authorities.

According to a survey, at least 27% of Mexicans hold the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador responsible for the death of 40 immigrants in the fire at a center of the National Institute of Migration (INM). In this incident, several organizations and political leaders branded the Executive’s measures as “inhumane” and a “state crime”.
