Rihanna was cast as the voice of Smurfette in Paramount Animation’s new live-action/animation hybrid film, ‘The Smurfs Movie.’
The singer made a surprise in-person appearance Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention of Las Vegas movie theater owners, to announce her involvement in the new film.
“I tried to get the role of Papa Smurf, but it didn’t work out,” the performer joked on stage at Caesar’s Palace Hotel and Casino, alongside Paramount Animation director Ramsey Naito.
It was revealed at the date that Rihanna will star in, write and record original songs and produce the upcoming project.
The film, according to Naito, will explore themes of identity and ask the central question: “What is a Smurf?”
Rihanna previously lent her voice to the DreamWorks Home animated feature ‘Hme.’ Her live action film credits include ‘Battleship’, ‘This Is the End’, ‘Valerian’, ‘Ocean’s 8’ and ‘Guava Island’.
Based on the comics by Belgian artist Peyo, the tribe of little blue creatures previously enjoyed a modern film franchise at Sony Pictures, which began over a decade ago.
Previous featured Smurfettes include Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, and Lucille Bliss.
The new film is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2025. Pam Brady wrote the script and Chris Miller will direct.
According to Variety, at the event on Thursday, Rihanna also confirmed that she is in the third trimester of pregnancy with her second child.
