A French travel company can make the fantasy possible for those who want a dinner “out of this world”. The agency will offer the opportunity to dine 15 miles up in a space balloon.
Zephalto, a company specializing in low-carbon balloon travel, plans to offer trips to Earth’s stratosphere in specially equipped balloons.
On each trip, only six guests will board the capsule and float through the air at 13 feet per second until they reach an altitude of approximately 15.5 miles above the Earth’s surface.
The entire trip takes six hours, including a 90-minute ascent, three hours of hovering, and a 90-minute descent.
Included in time afloat is a gourmet experience with a menu prepared by French chefs and wine tasting guided by renowned sommeliers on board.
The 15.5-mile elevation is a sweet spot for the experience, according to Vincent Farret d’Astiès, an aerospace engineer and founder of Zephalto.
“We chose 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) high because that is the altitude where you are in the darkness of space, with 98% of the atmosphere below you, so you can enjoy the curvature of the Earth at the blue line” , Farret d’Astiès told Bloomberg.
“Contemplating the earth is more than witnessing a panorama,” shares Zephalto.
Voyages will begin in 2025, at a spaceport in France, where guests should arrive a few days before their flight to familiarize themselves with the process and attend some exclusive events. It is planned that there will later be spaceports for all the continents.
Zephalto will use stratospheric balloons. The cost of the trips will start at 120,000 euros ($132,000) per person. Those interested in the experience can reserve a spot for the ride on Zephalto’s reservations page with an advance of $11,000.
According to the Zephalto website, the low-carbon journey into space in a stratospheric balloon is based on the 60 years of ballooning experience of the French Space Agency (CNES).
