In early March Justin Verlander suffered a right hamstring strain, which prevented him from pitching on Opening Day with the New York Mets. Due to his advanced age (40 years) the New York team has taken the pitcher very calmly in his recovery.
Since last week Verlander has had successful bullpen sessions and this Friday he had an outing in Double-A with the Binghamton affiliate of the Mets which was an outstanding performance, which excites the team in an early return of the pitcher to the Major Leagues .
4.2 innings of work in which he allowed only 2 hits, walked one and struck out 6. In total there were 69 pitches that Verlander executed, of which 52 were in the strike zone.
The next step for Verlander in his recovery will be to undergo an MRI this Sunday to see how his muscle reacted after the opening; If everything is in order, the right-handed pitcher could make his first start of the season on May 2 against the Detroit Tigers.
The Mets are in desperate need of a backup arm in their rotation as Jose Quintana started the season on the disabled list, Carlos Carrasco is also out for several weeks after his first three starts and Max Scherzer is still serving a 10-game suspension.
Despite the severe losses to the rotation, the Queens ninth team continues to fight in the East Division of the National League, where they are in second place, two games behind the Atlanta Braves.
