israelis-hold-protests-against-judicial-reform

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated again this Saturday in the center of Tel Aviv against the judicial reform promoted by the government of the conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, before a new parliamentary session begins on Monday.

Demonstrations have been held weekly throughout the country since January, despite the fact that a month ago the government announced a legislative “pause” to give it an “opportunity for dialogue.”

On this day, the protesters displayed banners in Tel Aviv with some phrases such as: “History has its eyes on you.” In this city the demonstrators lit torches and waved Israeli flags.

The Executive estimates that the measure it seeks to implement will serve to balance power between Parliament and the Supreme Court, branded as politicized by the current government coalition, the most right-wing in Israel’s history.

But opponents believe that the reform could push the country towards a liberal or authoritarian model.

In order to reach an understanding on the reform package, Israeli President Isaac Herzog organized a series of cross-party talks.

Negotiations began after Netanyahu announced the “legislative pause” on March 27, but the opposition has remained skeptical of the prime minister’s intentions.
