The president of the United States, Joe Biden, was informed about the shooting in Texas, where five people of Honduran nationality died, including an 8-year-old boy, according to a senior US official told the EFE agency.
The senior official, whose identity he did not publish, did not provide details on whether the Biden Administration contacted the Honduran government.
After the tragic event, the Honduran Foreign Minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, asked that the culprit be punished with “the full weight of the law.”
So far, the main suspect, identified as Francisco Oropeza, 38, remains at large. He is currently wanted by authorities in San Jacinto County, Texas, where the shooting occurred.
The alleged perpetrator of the shooting, a Mexican national, was charged with five counts of murder, while police warned that he may still possess the AR-15 assault rifle, which was used in the massacre.
San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said Oropeza was in his backyard shooting an AR-15 rifle when a neighbor approached him and asked him to stop shooting because it was too late and he was a baby. I was trying to sleep.
The suspect later responded by breaking into his neighbors’ home, shooting them in the neck and head, Capers added.
Of the five deceased inside the house where ten people lived, three were women. There was also a man and an 8-year-old boy, the sheriff said.
When the police arrived at the house, the agents found the adults lifeless, while the minor was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
More than a million Hondurans live in the United States, between residents and undocumented immigrants, according to Honduran sources.
