Immigration prisons in the United States have close to 25,000 migrants, a number that has been maintained since the beginning of 2023, according to a report from Syracuse University, New York.
The document explains that until April 22 of this year there were 24,944 people detained in different immigration jails in the country, of which 15,124 were registered by the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) and 9,820 by the Immigration Control Service. and Customs (ICE).
A large part of the detainees, 9,974, are in the ICE center in Texas. The highest number of people in ICE detention centers was reached in the month of March, with 27,723, according to the report by the Transactional Records Access Cleanhpuse (TRAC), a group of scholars at Syracuse University.
Likewise, the document highlights that although ICE sends fewer people to detention centers than CBP, ICE numbers have increased since December 2021, the year in which about 4,600 migrants were captured.
Likewise, it points out that 14,154 of the 24,944 or 56.7% of those arrested by ICE do not have a criminal record, according to the data updated for April 23. Many more only had minor crimes, including traffic violations.
The TRAC report also mentions that under ICE’s Alternatives to Detention (ATD) programs, which maintain electronic surveillance of immigrants outside of prison, there were 253,146 people.
