A preschool teacher who worked on a Stanford University campus was arrested along with a friend in the murder of a person this week.
The woman identified as Diana Ornelas, 22, of Santa Cruz, was arrested Wednesday along with her friend Dennis Novoa, 27.
Both are accused of fatally shooting Oliver Waterfall, 24, in Santa Cruz County on April 11, whose body was found on a hillside near a freeway.
Through a statement, authorities said they believed the motive was “personal in nature,” Fox News reported.
Ornelas was a teacher at a Stanford Community Children’s Center, a child care center on campus.
Meanwhile, a Stanford University spokesman said Ornelas was arrested at siesta time.
“The arrest occurred at nap time and outside the perimeter of the CCSC campus. The children were not present when this occurred and did not disrupt operations,” the university spokesperson told The Stanford Daily student media.
The sheriff’s department said the two arrests followed weeks of investigation and interviews.
“For the past two weeks, detectives have been conducting interviews and reviewing surveillance footage related to the case,” the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Both suspects were jailed without bail, according to FOX 2 San Francisco.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the case, while any citizen with information related to the incident is encouraged to call 831-454-7702.
