afro-latinos-face-greater-housing-and-income-challenges,-despite-their-level-of-education-(podcast)

Despite being more educated than non-black Hispanics or Latinos, Afro-Latinos face worse conditions in areas key to their personal development, including income and home ownership.

This is revealed by a new investigation from UCLA, which shows that this population has doubled in recent years.

The Afro-Latino population grew 121% between 2000 and 2019, according to the report, that means a growth rate of almost double that of non-black Latinos.

“Many challenges that Afro-Latinos face compared to other groups. Although Afro-Latinos have lower home ownership rates compared to other groups, 40.6% for Afro-Latinos vs. 54% for non-Black Latinos, those who own home have higher home values.

The report also notes that Afro-Latinos have higher education rates than non-Black Latinos, with 26% of Afro-Latinas completing a college degree, compared to 18% of other Latinas, while 20% of Afro-Latinos completed a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 15% of non-Black Latino men.

Nancy López, professor of sociology and director of the Institute for the Study of “Race” and Social Justice at the University of New Mexico and one of the authors of the report, explains in the podcast “El Diario Sin Límites” the findings on the Afro-Latino population and the challenges it faces.
