A group of three Argentine tourists was attacked last Friday, May 12, by a man with a machete in the La Isla sector, located in Laguna de Chacahua. Two of the tourists were injured, and one received a machete blow that caused his death.

According to an article from the news portal El Confidencial, the attack occurred in a restaurant on the beach of Laguna de Chacaua, on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico.

The murdered victim was identified as Benjamín Gamond, a 22-year-old rugby player, who was on vacation with his girlfriend, Macarena Elía González, and his best friend, who was identified as Santiago Lastra.

Fortunately, both González and Lastra received only superficial injuries and are out of mortal danger.

Reports from El Confidencial indicate that Gamond suffered a head injury and hypovolemic shock due to the injuries he received during the attack. Gamond passed away this Monday, May 15, in a hospital in Mexico City.

The attacker was identified as Cruz Irvin Martínez Flores, a 21-year-old man who was detained by the authorities.

Reports from Necochea Digital indicate that the Argentine tourists met Cruz Irvin Martínez Flores on a boat on the way to Laguna Chacahua.

According to Fox News, Cruz Irvin Martínez Flores was arrested and now faces multiple murder charges. The reason for the attack is unknown at this time. According to the Mexican newspaper Excelsior, Benjamín Gamond’s brother, Marcos, assured that “there was nothing prior” to the attack, and that it was an attack “treacherously, from behind.”

The rugby team that Benjamin Gamond played for expressed their condolences publicly.
