The Russian Defense Ministry reported Wednesday that Russian troops have taken up new defensive positions on the outskirts of the Ukrainian stronghold of Bakhmut, while the Wagner Group continues to advance into the western parts of the city.

According to the Russian defense authorities, mercenaries from the Wagner Group continued to fight for control of the western towns of the city, while the Russian Army Group South struggles to contain the Ukrainian Army on the flanks. “The most complex situation took place in the vicinity of the towns of Krásnoye and Bogdanivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the ministry said in a statement.

Last week, the Ukrainian Armed Forces claimed that they have had successful counterattacks during the latest moves they have made in the battle of Bakhmut, against the mercenary troops of the Russian Wagner Group. According to the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, General Oleksandr Syrski, the attacks caused the Russians to retreat to a distance of up to two kilometers.

The Ukrainian general indicated that in some areas, due to the pressure of his troops, the Wagner mercenaries were forced to cede their positions to soldiers of the Russian regular forces, less prepared, who have retreated before the advance of Kiev. Although the Russian Ministry of Defense accused the Wagners of abandoning their positions, being singled out for alleged treason to their country.

The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgenui Prigozhin, announced last weekend that his units continue the advance in Bakhmut and protect the flanks that some soldiers of the regular army previously abandoned. Units of the mercenary group managed to advance 550 meters in different directions in Bakhmut, Prigozhin said during a report to Russian media.
