WASHINGTON – The police in the US city of Asheville (North Carolina) managed to find a teenager who had been missing for six years, after being kidnapped by her mother, thanks to a call from a person who recognized her when hearing her case in a Netflix series.

Kahyla Unbehaun, who is now 15 years old, was in North Carolina, about 600 miles (965 km) from her father’s home in Illinois, who has not stopped looking for her for all these years, CNN publishes on Wednesday.

His case appeared in the last season of “Unsolved mysteries”, a Netflix series that tells “real cases of puzzling disappearances, shocking murders and paranormal encounters”, describes the platform.

Through a message on social networks, Netflix confirmed that “the owner of a store in North Carolina recognized Kayla Unbehaun, who was kidnapped in 2017 by her mother without custody,” and called the police. “A viewer of” Unsolved mysteries “has closed a case!”, said the platform.

Kayla was 9 years old when she was abducted by her mother, Heather Unbehaun, who had lost custody, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children said.

According to CNN, Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, was granted full custody in early 2017, while the mother was able to enjoy supervised visitation.

However, when Iserka went to pick up the girl after one of the visits, she discovered that they had gone on a trip. An arrest warrant for kidnapping was issued for Unbehaun on July 28, 2017.

During these years, Iserka carried out a campaign on social networks to try to locate the girl until last Saturday a man called the police to say that he had seen her in a store and that he had recognized her after seeing her in the series. .

Unbehaun was arrested the same Saturday and the already adolescent was handed over to her father, who through social networks thanked the citizens for their participation and asked for privacy for the “new beginning” that the reunion entails.
