And it is that the Herrera family decided to give a twist to the traditional shell, a popular sweet bread that is tasted in Mexican homes, to create the “Conchatépetl”, alluding to “Don Goyo”, as Popocatépetl is also known.

“It occurred to us to do it with the specialty of the house, which are stuffed shells,” Iván Herrera told local journalist Carlos Martín.

“Conchatépetl” filled with “lava” and even “ash”

The “Conchatépetl” are filled with strawberry jam, which appears in the same way in the central part of the bread, simulating the lava, and around it, in addition to having the white icing, a chocolate cookie is sprinkled, emulating the ash from the volcano.

The filling can not only be strawberry, but there are several flavors such as cream, Nutella, raspberry, cream cheese, apple and pineapple, but what is always strawberry is the content in the central part that simulates the lava of the volcano.

Each piece costs 20 Mexican pesos (approximately one dollar).

But the Herrera family is not the only one that is making “Conchatepetl”, since another bakery in Puebla is also offering it, although with its own style, which lovers of sweet bread are undoubtedly tasting.

They create the “Popochelas”

Although they are not the only creative ones, since in some places the so-called “Popochelas” are also being offered, which are frosty beers with a powder simulating the ash of Popocatépetl.

The “Popochelas” arose in a Puerto Escondido spa, located in Cholula, Puebla, its creators admit that at first it was a joke, and that the frosty was ash from the volcano, but since it is not edible, they set about the task of creating an edible gray frosting.
