A 15-year-old boy drowned while five other people were pulled from the water at a New Jersey beach over Memorial Day weekend, reports said.
The victim, whose name was not released, was swimming in a section of Sandy Hook Beach where no lifeguards were on duty Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. when passersby heard a woman yell that she didn’t see her son, reported ABC News.
Both passersby and lifeguards who were close to the place ran into the sea to get the rest of the swimmers, including the 15-year-old teenager.
“People jumped into the water to grab the swimmers,” witness Luis Sánchez told the outlet. “And then there was one missing that they couldn’t get.”
The events occurred in one of several areas in the Gateway National Recreation Area, in Monmouth County, despite signs warning citizens that lifeguards were not at work on that beach, the New York Post reported.
“When it’s windy, the weather is like that, there are swells and you can easily drown,” said Sánchez.
Four of the five survivors were taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptine, while another refused medical attention, an Asbury Park Press report noted.
Meanwhile, the conditions of the other four swimmers have not been disclosed at the moment, according to the aforementioned media.
