A 4-year-old girl was seriously injured after she accidentally shot herself in the head last Monday with a gun her father left loaded on the floor of their Grovetown, Georgia, home.
The girl’s father, identified as 24-year-old Davion Daniels, left a 9mm weapon on the floor as he went downstairs to take a phone call, Grovetown police said, according to CBS.
A short time later, he heard a shot and ran upstairs; at the time of the accident, there were several people in the house on Sterlington Drive.
Daniels and a family member took the injured girl to their vehicle and began driving to the hospital, the outlet reports.
Along the way, they encountered Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who later contacted Grovetown police.
Daniels was arrested on one count of second-degree cruelty to a child and “possession of a machine gun,” according to The Augusta Chronicle.
The man is now accused of illegally modifying the “Glock” (a brand of semi-automatic pistols) to make it fully automatic.
The girl was hospitalized in critical condition starting Monday, police said, according to the outlet on its website. “This incident was totally preventable,” Grovetown Police Chief James Kitchens said.
The nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety has documented more than 120 unintentional shootings by children so far this year in the country, resulting in 53 deaths of children under 10 years of age and 71 injuries as of December 16. May.
It should be noted that Georgia does not have a law that requires the safe storage of firearms to prevent children from accessing them.
Grovetown, where the accident occurred, is located in the Augusta metropolitan area.
