It is no secret to anyone that there are not a few dissatisfied Republicans in the United States Congress over the agreement on raising the debt ceiling. In fact, many are already expected to vote against this agreement, reached between Congressman Kevin McCarthy and US President Joe Biden.
But it has been the representative Dan Bishop, a Republican elected by the state of North Carolina, who has spoken for the first time about the possibility of expelling McCarthy from the spokesperson for the GOP caucus in the US House of Representatives. by the agreement, as reported by the news portal The Hill.
According to reports from The Hill, Bishop responded, when asked if he would support a motion to expel McCarthy from the spokesperson, that “it is something that has to be done.”
However, Bishop did not publicly commit to present the motion to empty the spokesperson. This would involve a vote to remove Congressman McCarthy from his position as spokesman and leader of the Republican caucus.
“I will decide that in conjunction with others,” Bishop said, hinting at the possibility that such a move is already being discussed in Congress.
According to information reviewed by the EFE news agency, the Republicans of the most right wing of the GOP are already working to prevent the approval of the agreement on the debt ceiling.
Chip Roy, a Republican congressman for the state of Texas, declared that “No Republican should vote in favor of this agreement,” and asserted that he is “working hard” to stop it, according to information from EFE.
If the agreement is approved, the debt ceiling will be raised for the next two years, that is, until after the next presidential elections.
The proposal, according to EFE, maintains non-defense spending in 2024 and increases it by only 1% in 2025, and although the cuts will not affect health programs or Social Security, some social programs will be affected. such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
