An 11-year-old Florida girl died after being left in a vehicle for three hours while her parents attended a religious service, according to authorities.
The Palm Bay Police Department responded to an incident Sunday around 1:00 p.m. with a report of an unresponsive infant inside a vehicle.
“When they arrived, they learned that the baby had been left in a car for approximately three hours while the parents went to church service,” Palm Bay police said in a statement.
The baby had to be transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police confirmed Tuesday, though the time of her death has not been given, a police spokesman said.
“This is an unfortunate incident, and our condolences and prayers are with the family,” Palm Bay Police Chief Mario Augello said in a statement.
So far, no arrests have been made in the case, but the investigation is still ongoing, authorities said.
The city of Palm Bay is about 75 miles southeast of Orlando, whose temperatures last Sunday hovered around 70 degrees.
However, under those conditions, the temperature in a vehicle could exceed 115 degrees, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that 33 children died from heat stroke in vehicles in 2022.
