The whole world is waiting for Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’. Meanwhile, various outlets seek to speak with the director and her leading stars: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera and others.
Recently the specialized magazine ‘Architectural Digest’ spoke with Gerwig about the Barbie universe and her magical house, which she created together with an enviable team. First of all, it must be said that those in charge were the production designer Sarah Greenwood and the set decorator Katie Spencer, the same team that was in charge of the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Anna Karenina’ sets.
Gerwig wanted the houses in her Barbie universe to not have four walls, for her there is nothing to hide. She’s also a great reference to the houses every girl in a generation had.
The 39-year-old filmmaker also tells the magazine that Greenwood and Spencer were inspired by 1950s modernism in Palm Springs, California. She referenced Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House and other icons photographed by Slim Aarons.
But another thing to take into account were the Barbie toy houses, the ones that everyone or almost everyone knows, since the two designers had never had one and they had to ask for it on Amazon. With that they managed to understand the proportions and what a Barbie would actually look like inside of it. Gerwig clarifies: “I didn’t want to forget what made me love Barbie.”
The entire installation of this recording set was done on a lot at Warner Bros. Studios UK, just outside London.
So far two ‘Barbie’ trailers have been released, which have everyone very excited. It was also announced that the film comes with its own album, which will feature artists such as: Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid , Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Pink Panthers, Ryan Gosling, Tame Impala and The Kid Laroi.
