A man from Green Bay, Wisconsin, identified as Pedro Santiago Márquez, 34, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for murdering a person and then burning his body. This was reported by the Green Bay Press Gazette news portal.

The victim was identified as Jason Mendez Ramos, who was a native of the town of Ashwuabenon, located in Brown County, Wisconsin.

The Green Bay Press Gazette newspaper indicated that Pedro Santiago Márquez was found guilty of the murder of Méndez Ramos, as well as of mutilating his body, a charge for which he received an additional 10 years in prison, which he must serve in parallel to his life sentence.

The sentence was handed down by Judge William Atkinson, who determined that Márquez will be eligible for parole on July 19, 2064.

The jury, reviewed the Green Bay Press Gazette, established that Márquez murdered, or ordered the murder, of Méndez Ramos in a store that the murderer had at 1638 E. Mason St., in Green Bay.

Subsequently, Márquez ordered that the body of Méndez Ramos be burned, which was found in the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum on September 28, 2021 in the morning.

Despite the verdict, Márquez maintained his innocence to the end, assuring that Méndez Ramos was “his best friend” and expressed his condolences for his death, but stressed that he did not.

“I say this in front of my family: They know that I am innocent and the type of person that I am,” Marquez said, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.

The main hypothesis of the investigators, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette, is that Márquez owed money related to drugs to Méndez Ramos. However, the evidence on this topic was limited by the judge.

During the trial it was discovered that Márquez owed money to many of his employees. He owned a paint shop and a towing company.

Márquez’s mother stressed the positive qualities of her son: he migrated from Puerto Rico to the United States and worked to bring money to his family, as well as help others. This was reported by the Green Bay Press Gazette.
