Never give up hope when it comes to the Lottery and respond promptly to moments of inspiration, like Michael Schlemmer, a Corbin native, who, running out of gas, stopped to buy gas and a lottery ticket that turned out to be winner with $1 million dollars.
In a statement from the Kentucky State Lottery, the lucky experience of the new millionaire was shared: Michael Schlemmer stopped at a local station to fill up the gas tank. When it was time to pay, he took what was due for the fuel and with the remaining change he bought a “scratch-off” ticket that changed his life for the better.
Schlemmer is originally from Corbin, about 114 miles south of Frankfurt, he always believed that he was out of luck and that bad fortune was chasing him, until on May 18, when he looked at the dashboard of the car, he realized that the fuel tank gasoline only had the reserve.
Schlemmer went to the nearest service station, on Highway 25 West in Corbin.
“I ran out of gas and stopped there,” said the million-dollar winner. “I had $40 and I bought $20 worth of gas and I bought a ticket.”
He never imagined what fate would hold for him, but he listened to his intuition, to that small moment of trust that convinced him to buy a ticket.
Then he scratched off his $20 ticket and realized he had won the game’s $1 million jackpot. And the lucky man returned to the store where he bought the ticket from him: “I just got up and went back to the store and showed them (to the store clerks). I won’t believe it until I have the check in hand.”
After all the hubbub and anxious to collect his prize, Schlemmer finally went to the Lottery offices last Thursday, where he cashed a generous check for $616,330 after taxes, preferring to pay in cash instead of $862,000 distributed in annuities.
Now, with more budget, the winner plans to change his car for a newer one and will invest the rest of the prize in the bank.
