Unfortunate event in German youth football. A 15-year-old soccer player died after being seriously injured in a fight that occurred last Sunday between French and local players at the soccer tournament in Frankfurt, Germany.

As reported by the Bild newspaper, the 15-year-old Berliner from Berlin was seriously injured in the middle of a fight between FC Metz U-17 and JFC Berlin club, of the same category. As the Frankfurt attorney general, Nadja Niesen, told the same newspaper, “a 16-year-old from Metz attacked another opponent and hit the 15-year-old Berliner in the face, head and stomach. Although the victim was able to free himself, the alleged perpetrator ran after the now-deceased man and gave him a strong blow to the “back of the head.”

The victim had to be resuscitated on site and upon admission to the hospital it was discovered that he had severe brain injuries. The alleged perpetrator was arrested on Monday and the young man was declared brain dead the night of the following day. Only the machines kept him alive.

“After a fight broke out after a soccer match as part of an international youth tournament in Eckenheim this past Whitsunday, the 15-year-old victim is today in hospital as a result of his severe brain injuries deceased,” reported the Frankfurt police at the time.

Investigations into the facts, particularly the motive for the crime, are still ongoing by the Frankfurt criminal police. The 16-year-old suspect remains in custody.

“We are shocked by what happened. It is extremely sad. We are on the floor. We think of the victim’s colleagues and parents,” said the tournament organizers through their website. For their part, Metz, the team of the person allegedly responsible for the murder, denied that their player had intentionally inflicted injuries on their rival.
