what-is-the-rupture-of-esophageal-varices,-a-condition-that-sent-daniel-bisogno-to-the-hospital

Last Monday, May 29, Pati Chapoy, the main host of the TV Azteca show “Ventaneando”, announced that this weekend, Daniel Bisogno had to be admitted to an emergency room after presenting a severe liver disease caused by the rupture of some esophageal varices.

“Very unfortunately, some varicose veins in his esophagus burst, for which they had to intervene to glue the varicose veins that burst and begin to tie the varicose veins that were about to burst,” Chapoy explained to his audience.

In the same way, he indicated that Bisogno left intensive care in a hospital in Mexico City and that his state of health has gradually improved; However, he will remain hospitalized for several days because they will have to do more studies to determine what was the cause of his health problem, as well as to find out how other organs are, such as the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.

What is the rupture of esophageal varices?

According to information provided by the Mayo Clinic, esophageal varices are veins found in the stomach that connect the throat to the stomach.

Generally, esophageal varices appear when a person has severe liver disease, since they are generated when the normal blood flow to the liver is blocked due to a clot or fibrous tissue that has formed in this organ.

The problem with esophageal varices is when they burst because they can cause serious bleeding in the digestive tract and depending on the degree of bleeding, a person could suffer hypovolemic shock, putting their lives at risk.

Symptoms of esophageal varices

In general, these do not cause symptoms; however, they are usually shown by hemorrhages that present in the following ways:

* Vomiting large amounts of blood
* Dark, tarry or bloody stools
* Fainting due to blood loss
* Loss of consciousness in severe cases

On medical examination, a doctor may suspect that a person has this condition given the following characteristics:

* Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
* Bleeding or bruising easily
* Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (ascites)

Causes of esophageal varices

Esophageal varices are usually caused by scar tissue, which forms in the liver from liver disease, causing blood flow to begin to back up. This causes increased pressure within the portal vein, which is responsible for carrying blood to the liver, a problem known as portal hypertension.

This type of hypertension forces the blood to find other routes through the smaller veins, such as those found in the lowest part of the esophagus. These thin-walled veins swell with the increase in blood. Sometimes they rupture and cause bleeding.

Other causes of esophageal varices include cirrhosis, as well as other liver diseases, such as hepatitis infection, alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, and a disorder of the bile ducts called primary biliary cholangitis.

In the same way, a thrombosis in the liver can unleash this health problem, as well as a parasitic infection.

Treatment

Generally, esophageal varices are treated through ligation, as well as specific medications to treat the disease.
