A 12-year-old boy is recovering at home after he accidentally fell into a well in Washington state during school recess.
The young man was standing on the manhole cover last Tuesday “when the concrete partially collapsed” causing the child to fall inside, according to a news release from the Marysville Fire District.
The well is located next to a pump house behind St. Mary’s Catholic Church, according to KIRO-TV, a CBS affiliate.
Rescuers arrived at the scene just before 12:30 p.m. local time and found the boy “partially submerged in water” and “clinging to a plastic tube about 20 feet” underground, the fire district said. . He was unable to touch bottom and suffered numerous head lacerations as a result of the fall.
Authorities say the 12-year-old boy was able to follow rescuers’ orders and put on a harness and helmet that firefighters brought down for him, according to the Marysville Fire District.
Then, the firefighters “gently” removed what was left of the concrete cover and went down a ladder to the boy, who was able to get out “on his own.”
The boy was transported to Providence Hospital after the rescue and is in stable condition.
“We are very grateful to share that a 12-year-old boy is expected to be well,” the fire district said in the news release.
The fire district also shared its appreciation for the other agencies that responded to the scene, including the Marysville Police, Everett Fire Department and Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue Department.
