The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, assured this Thursday at the summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in Moldova that the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will make a decision on Ukraine’s request to enter the the Alliance ahead of the July 11-12 summit in Vilnius in Lithuania. Ukraine’s proximity to the Atlantic organization would have been one of the triggers for the Russian invasion.
According to the Romanian president, he remains skeptical about the possibility of drawing up a roadmap or timetable for Ukraine’s entry into the Alliance, fearing that it could induce unwanted reactions, alluding to a military response by Russia. “We will make a decision before the summit,” Iohannis said after meeting Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called in his summit address for member states to formulate a clear invitation for Ukraine to join NATO at the Vilnius summit. Zelensky also asked to receive security guarantees from NATO until the moment of accession.
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, considered last week that the Russian war against Ukraine is bringing Kiev closer and closer to belonging to the coalition of countries with military cooperation as a whole point, as support for Ukrainian forces with military equipment from NATO members is increasing.
The NATO secretary general said he noted that several countries have realized that becoming a member in the midst of war is not on the current agenda. When asked if he believes that the Russian invasion makes it easier for Ukraine to join the Alliance, the Norwegian politician answered yes and no. “The war ensures that Ukraine is getting even closer to NATO,” said the Secretary General.
