Two babies used drugs this week in separate incidents at homes in The Bronx (NYC) and their parents were arrested.
In the first case, a 2-year-old girl “showed signs of an opioid overdose” after swallowing “an unknown substance” inside an apartment on East 181st Street near Arthur Avenue in the Belmont neighborhood around 1:40 p.m. Monday, authorities said.
Her mother, Cassidy Reid, 37, took the baby to the pediatric emergency room at St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was given Narcan – the main version of the overdose-reversal drug, naloxone – and stabilized, he said. New York Post citing court documents.
An officer who visited the apartment found “residues of a powdery white substance” believed to be cocaine on the dining room table, according to the criminal complaint against Reid. About 30 pills were found in a bottle with no name or prescription, believed to be amphetamine, lorazepam and methylphenidate, the court document said.
Reid told police she was napping when someone in the apartment suddenly woke her up “and said the baby was not breathing,” the complaint alleges. The mother was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
The next day, in a similar case, police found an 18-month-old girl unconscious after she allegedly ingested drugs in an apartment on Honeywell Avenue near East 179th Street in West Farms around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. .
The little girl was given Narcan and also taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was also stabilized, police said.
His parents, Karon Powell, 35, and Malquisha Durant, 28, were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, acting in a manner injurious to a minor, and criminal possession of a controlled substance. A bag of cocaine residue was found in the bedroom near the TV, police said.
In early May a couple was charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child after their 16-month-old baby was found dead of an apparent fentanyl overdose at the motel where the family had been living in Liberty ( NY).
Also in May, the medical examiner determined that a baby who spent the night at his father’s house in February in Staten Island (NYC) died after ingesting a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
