Authorities in Colorado have not released the identity of the teenager who died after he “surfed” while hanging from a moving car in a new trend that has caught on among youth in the state in recent weeks.
The tragic incident was reported on May 5. That day, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies were alerted to an accident on Quarry Drive.
Witnesses told authorities that passengers in the back seat were hanging from the car windows before the crash.
The 16-year-old victim suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The authorities in the county took the opportunity to urge young people not to engage in this type of action.
The office said that in recent weeks it has responded to six calls involving youth “surfing” in vehicles.
“It is crucial to understand that this activity is incredibly dangerous and the consequences can be fatal,” the DCSO warned.
The entity also released images of one of the incidents reported on April 17 that shows two boys sitting on the “sun roof” of a car that was traveling at 55 mph at night.
Apparently, the practice emerged on social networks as a challenge among young people.
