Sebastián Villa, a Colombian soccer player for the Argentine Boca Juniors, was sentenced this Friday to two years in prison for being involved in a case of gender violence against his ex-partner Daniela Cortés.
Claudia Dávalos, head of Court No. 2 of Lomas de Zamora, in charge of the process, ordered Villa to avoid any type of contact with the victim and her relatives, participate in workshops on gender violence and receive psychosocial therapy. According to the sentence, the Colombian will also have to “refrain from using narcotics and abusing alcoholic beverages.”
The charges for which the Colombian was sentenced were “minor injuries aggravated by the bond” and “mediating gender violence and coercive threats.” Before the trial, Villa denied the accusations and claimed to be “an excellent person.” “I am a good son, a good brother. I believe in God. I hope everything goes well. I am innocent,” Villa said in statements to the press.
The 27-year-old player was facing a possible sentence of up to six years and had pleaded not guilty throughout the judicial process that began orally on April 17 by the Correctional Court 2 of the town of Lomas de Zamora, in Buenos Aires.
Daniela Cortés denounced the soccer player trained in Deportes Tolima in her country after attacking him on April 27, 2020. Cortés published photos of her injuries on social networks and the next day she denounced Villa.
Now the decision of Boca Juniors on the future of the Colombian player is expected. Juan Román Riquelme, vice president of the xeneize club, said a few days ago that Villa’s case was “a very sensitive issue” and that the club would take “the measures it has to take, accordingly” after the verdict is known.
With the Argentine team, Sebastián Villa has two Argentine Super Cups, one Super League, two League Cups, one Cup and the 2022 First Division Championship.
