After Title 42 came to an end, the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that irregular crossings into the country decreased by 70%, however, the neighboring country, Mexico, has reported a growing number of immigrants.
The country led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has been overwhelmed in terms of asylum applications, which is why it has decided to implement an application similar to CBP One to expedite the processes, reported CNN.
Andrés Ramírez, director of the Mexican Commission for Aid to Refugees (COMAR), revealed that at this time the implementation of an app would be the most convenient given the growing number of applicants.
“We are receiving so many people that we simply cannot keep up,” he said.
Ramírez, who has been working on the commission for several years, also said he was surprised by the considerable increase in asylum applications in Mexico City and not in Tapachula, a city that borders Guatemala.
And it is that since May 18 the applications have not stopped arriving “since that time 3,300 applications have been submitted in Mexico City and 3,000 in Tapachula.”
Despite the fact that the CBP One application has been severely criticized, Mexico is looking for a quick exit through the app that will be called “pre-registration system” that will allow people to register their intention to request asylum online and it is hoped that with this step speeds up the process.
Ramírez told CNN that the application is expected to come into force next week, but only in Mexico City, and later throughout the Mexican Republic.
The director of COMAR took the opportunity to clarify that people who make an appointment through the “pre-registration system” have every right to request an appointment at CPB One to make entry appointments legally through a port of entry to Present your asylum case.
Some immigrants and advocacy groups have taken aim at CBP One because making an appointment requires an asylum seeker to have a smartphone.
So far it is unknown if Mexico will require a smartphone for the “pre-registration system”, but if so, it will face the same problems as the US application.
Although both applications are similar, with the Mexican one it will not be necessary to make an appointment outside of Mexico.
CBP informed the aforementioned medium that the application works as planned and at the moment more than 79,000 people have made an appointment since its launch in January 2023.
